Happens all the time Down Under but the results are rarely as hilarious.

But with ASTONS

I’d like to see this become more of a thing. Camper suspension is usually just leaf springs and maybe some shocks, sometimes a friction sway control bar, too. Imagine what they could come up with if they had to take these things racing more regularly...

It might actually be more interesting if they put more weight in them. That would make it much more of a skills competition.

It’s already a heck of a skills competition though. If only they’d actually try to race without wrecking them all “Top Gear” style.

Trailers are naturally terrible for this sort of thing, so they’d have to regulate the heck out of, lest the teams strip the trailers down to mere flatbeds... so I guess there’d have to be minimum height and weight specs.

I don’t know if there’s anything new in the world of trailer mods, but last I checked, the only handling equipment available was shocks, sway control bars, and weight distribution hitches. I’m sure they could do better.

I need a carbon fiber red bull can holder in my car now.

Plenty of campers down here run independent suspension systems using trailing arms, coil springs and shocks and (more rarely) a sway bar.

AL-KO is a major brand but there are others like Huntsman Products and Cruisemaster. My mother’s van runs a Cruisemaster XT suspension...it’s very impressive.

Neat! Is that a recent development, or just found on high-end campers?

AL-KO have been around for over twenty years so the history of this type of suspension is long enough. It’s more common in mid to high range campers and caravans but virtually every camper or caravan with off road aspirations has a suspension system like this.

Yeah I definitely recognize the brand name, I just haven’t seen them offering this kind of setup before. Maybe I wasn’t working on the right campers (mostly Keystone & Fleetwood products), or maybe I’ve just been out of the industry for too long.

Meanwhile, a few decades earlier and possibly on the same track as those Astons...
